What is ACIM?
As a long-time student of A Course in Miracles (ACIM), Brian offers visitors to The Treasure House the following reflections in answer to the question, “What is ACIM?”:
A Course in Miracles is a program of spiritual development, consisting of a Text, a Workbook for Students, and a Manual for Teachers. It sets out fundamental principles, lessons for daily practice, and guidance to help those of us who embrace its teachings to regain the awareness of our divine nature and to extend this awareness to others.
The Manual for Teachers summarizes the Course’s own curriculum as follows: “Forgive the world, and you will understand that everything that God created cannot have an end, and nothing He did not create is real.” It goes on to say, “God reigns forever, and His laws alone prevail upon you and upon the world. His love remains the only thing there is. Fear is illusion, for you are like Him.”
As a Course student, I come to the understanding that each day, each hour, and every minute, I am making a choice about the nature of who I think I am and the nature of the God who created me. I can choose the ego, my limited and fearful picture of myself, through which I will see a world of sin, separation, sickness, and death. Or I can choose the Holy Spirit within, through which I will see only the reflection of the eternal – expressions of love and requests for love from my brothers. The Manual states:
“There are only two thought systems, and you demonstrate that you believe one or the other is true all the time. From your demonstrations others learn and so do you. Any situation must be to you a chance to teach others what you are and what they are to you. No more than that, but also never less.”
Through learning to make this choice, I learn to work miracles. I extend forgiveness to my brothers and to the world, thereby reclaiming my awareness of eternal love. I learn that extending miracles is my only function, and my key to true happiness.
